DOG MTN - SEYMOUR MTN
Vancouver locals know this route all too well, but do you know it at night? It's a whole new adventure once the sun sets and the only light guiding you is the headlamp strapped to your trusty toque.
The trail is about 5km round trip, averaging 1.5-2hrs depending on your speed. It's a great route for all abilities, especially if you add in the eerie silence of night time hiking. The path is usually packed down from constant use, making yaktrax or crampons a good alternate option to bulkier snowshoes. Just don't venture too far off the trail as you'll find yourself waist deep in powder! Although...maybe you should??
At the top of Dog Mtn on a clear night, you get a stunning view of North Vancouver, the Lions Gate Bridge, Stanley Park, and downtown Vancouver off in the distance. If you're feeling ambitious, pack along your stove, some cheese fondue and hot cocoa and have yourself a delicious snack before making the trek back to the parking lot.
To find the trail head: Park in the Mount Seymour Resort parking lot (in North Vancouver, BC) at the top of Mount Seymour Parkway road. From your car, walk towards the BC Parks sign at the northwest corner. Walk north along the wide trail alongside the ski run for about 20 meters until you see a small sign and a trail that goes into the trees on your left.
Dress for the weather, bring extra supplies just in case and enjoy the scenery!
